Description:
Triticum aestivum or bread wheat is one of the three main cereal crops along with other members of the Poaceae, rice and maize. Wheat cultivation began in the Fertile Crescent and is now distributed all over the globe. It is the source of a fifth of calories consumed by humans.
Wheat has a highly complex genome; it is a hexaploid with three donor genomes (A, B and D), and a high degree of repetitive DNA.
